The Spiritual Growth and Community Center (SGCC) at Unitarian Universalist Congregation in the Assabet Valley (UUCAV), in collaboration with WomanRoot Project, proudly presents When the Drummers Were Women: an Art Herstory Presentation and Drum/Voice Ritual Performance.
 
The association between women and drumming is deeply rooted in the ancient herstory of the Mediterranean world. Archaeological finds, such as a 1400 BCE frame drum from the tomb of a woman named Hatnofer, confirm that Priestesses were often the primary musicians and choreographers for religious ceremonies. Throughout the Ancient Mediterranean World, the drummers were predominantly women, who used the beats of their frame drums to rouse community consciousness and attain spiritual awareness for healing and divination. 
 
This art herstory presentation and ritual drum and voice performance with Barbara Gail presents the slide show that was the basis of the book When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm, authored by her friend, teacher and muse, the late Layne Redmond. The lost but not forgotten herstory of women as primary percussionists in Ancient Times comes alive in over 100 photographs from temples and museums of actual artifacts. Barbara will perform ritual drumming featuring frame drums, singing, and spoken word.
